On Tuesday, eight names were forwarded
to the senate for confirmation as ministers. Among the eight, there was a
familiar name – Musiliu Obanikoro (Lagos), the former minister of state
for defence who had resigned his appointment last year in order to vie
for the PDP governorship ticket in Lagos.
He lost that ticket to Jimi
Agbaje and is believed to have negotiated a ministerial appointment as
condition to drop the suit he filed against the winner over infractions
noticed during the primary.
When Obanikoro’s name was read out,
there were loud murmurings on the floor of the senate, mostly from
opposition senators who wondered why Obanikoro was getting another shot
so soon after his resignation.
Others who were nominated include
Fidelis Nwanko (Ebonyi State), Hauwa Lawan (Jigawa State), Senator
Patricia Akwashiki (Nasarawa State), Prof. Nicolas Ada (Benue State),
Joel Danladi (Taraba State), Kenneth Kobanni (Rivers State) and
Augustine O. (Abia State).
The nominees are expected to be
confirmed in order to fill the vacuum left behind by some ministers who
resigned to contest the governorship primaries of the Peoples Democratic
Party.
