Nigeria’s National Security Adviser (NSA), Sambo Dasuki has said that all known Boko Haram camps in the country will be “taken out” in six weeks.
Dasuki stated this to news agency Agence France Presse (AFP) on Monday, February 9.
"All known Boko Haram camps will be taken out. They won't be there. They will be dismantled,” Dasuki said.
The NSA was responding to a question on how much progress could be made against the terrorists before the new date for Nigeria’s recently postponed elections.
Dasuki had first called for a poll shift to enable citizens collect their Permanent Voters Cards (PVC) before later informing the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) that security couldn’t be provided for the polls if they were held in February.
This led the Chairman of INEC, Attahiru Jega to announce a six-week postponement on Saturday, February 7.
Dasuki however insisted that the elections would not be postponed any further.
The poll shift has been condemned by the United States and many Nigerians while the opposition party, All Progressives Congress (APC) described it as a provocative move.
