After
two months on Twitter, the account of the Vice Presidential Candidate
of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Professor Yemi Osinbajo (SAN),
@ProfOsinbajo, was verified last Friday afternoon.
Unlike others who get verified, send out
a few tweets and – yaay - it’s over, Prof. Osinbajo never misses an
opportunity to – you know – preach, or teach or explain. This was no
exception.
He released a statement talking about his experience so far on social media.
He admitted that he had followed online
conversations passively for a long time but had to get fully involved
when he was picked to join the APC Presidential Ticket.
“I consider myself a Digital Immigrant,
while all those born in the Computer Age are the Natives,” he said. “It
took a while to get used to it, but I have always known social media to
be a very useful tool for engagement, enlightenment and entertainment.
Its huge value to Nigeria and the nation we hope to build cannot be
overestimated and I’m grateful for how I have been so well received. It
has been extremely interesting.”
Professor Osinbajo said a Buhari-led
federal administration would promote information technology and make it a
primary source of employment for the millions of unemployed youths in
Nigeria. He said industrial and technology parks would be developed and
equipped free Internet and electricity to help young program developers.
Loans would also be made accessible for young entrepreneurs, he added.
“Nigeria is blessed with very talented
young people who should be ruling the world in the IT world. All they
need is a platform to shine and I believe we could have the next Mark
Zuckerberg or Steve Jobs from amongst us. Africa is waiting for Nigeria
to lead it on the technological superhighway and I believe the current
generation of young Nigerians have it in them to take us to the
moon,” the Law Professor summed up.
